From Older Housing to Commercial Premises

Grafton has the largest and most varied building stock in the region we cover, and that shows up in the work. Federation and post-war houses with wiring extended piecemeal over decades, commercial premises on and around Prince Street, and light industrial sites out towards the highway all ask something different of an electrician.

At Justin Purdey Electrical, we're licensed electricians in Grafton working across all three, under Contractors Licence No. 402413C. Travelling out from our base is a normal part of the job rather than an exception, and we're contactable 24 hours a day for faults that can't wait. Call 0402 162 184 to talk through what you need.

Residential Electrical in Grafton

Older housing tends to hide its electrical history. Circuits get extended into new rooms, a previous owner adds a garage, and what started as a straightforward installation becomes something nobody has a full picture of.

Part of what we do on residential jobs is establish that picture before adding anything to it. The work itself spans lighting and ceiling fan replacements, additional power points, dedicated appliance circuits, renovation and extension wiring, data cabling, outdoor and garage power and TV antenna or Starlink installation.

We'll give you a clear read on what's genuinely urgent versus what's simply old, because the two aren't the same thing and treating them as one gets expensive quickly.

Commercial Electrical in Grafton

Commercial electrical work divides fairly cleanly into three: getting a new space fitted out, keeping an existing one running, and responding when something fails. We handle all three.

Fit-out work covers power, lighting and data laid out to suit how the space will actually be used, coordinated with whoever else is on site. Ongoing maintenance means scheduled checks of switchboards, RCDs, exit and emergency lighting and the equipment circuits carrying the heaviest use.

Breakdowns get answered at any hour, which matters more to certain businesses than others but matters to all of them eventually. Larger premises with three-phase supply and substantial equipment loads sit comfortably within what we take on.

Industrial Electrical in Grafton

Light industrial premises are usually running equipment the original installation never anticipated. A second compressor goes in, a machine gets replaced with something larger, and the distribution board slowly falls behind what's connected to it.

We assess the whole picture, then work out whether the answer is a new circuit, a sub-board or additional supply capacity. Three-phase installation and repair, machinery circuits sized to real starting current, high-bay LED lighting, isolation and switching where operators need it and underground cable runs between buildings all form part of the work.

Where a fault is intermittent, we'd rather spend the time finding the cause than replace parts until it stops, which is generally the cheaper route anyway.

Switchboard Upgrades in Grafton

Plenty of properties are still running boards installed decades ago, with rewireable ceramic fuses and no residual current protection at all. Those boards did the job for the load they were built around, but they can't protect against the fault that actually injures someone, which is current leaking to earth through a person rather than an overload on the wiring.

Replacing the board fixes that. We install circuit breakers throughout, RCDs across every circuit and enough spare capacity that the next addition doesn't mean starting again. We check the existing supply and the wiring behind the board as part of the job, then test every circuit once the new board is live and provide the compliance paperwork.

Lighting changes how a space works more than almost anything else you can do to it for the money. Swapping banks of halogen downlights for LED is the most common request, and it drops both the running cost and the heat load in the ceiling space without touching the wiring behind the fittings.

We also install pendant, track and strip lighting, outdoor sensor and flood lighting and ceiling fans on existing or new circuits. Fans need a ceiling structure that can carry the load and wiring that supports a speed controller, and where either is missing we sort it as part of the install.

Supply your own fittings if you'd prefer, as long as they're compliant.

Common Questions

  • A switchboard upgrade replaces the board and its protective devices while leaving the existing circuits in place. A rewire replaces the cabling running through the walls and ceiling, which is a far larger job and only necessary where the wiring itself has deteriorated.
